Edinburgh Anarchist Studies Group

The Anarchist Studies group aims to provide a comfortable, relaxed and stimulating environment for people who are interested in talking about anarchist ideas. You do not have to call yourself an 'anarchist' or be a 'student' (though either is ok, too!). All we ask is that you keep an open mind and come prepared to talk with other people who are interested in anarchist ideas.

Anarchism means challenging the notions that it's okay for some people to speak for others, to tell others how to live or to exploit other people. Against fixed hierarchies, anarchism promotes negotiated relationships and horizontal forms organisation. Against both capitalism and state socialism, anarchism offers a variety of ideas for participatory and co-operative economics. Against government by an elite, elected or otherwise, anarchist history provides examples of decentralised self-government based on direct democracy in communities and workplaces. Against everyday hierarchies of race, class, gender, sexuality, age and disability, anarchism offers inspiration for struggles against all forms of domination and supports the inherent value of every human life. Against environmental destruction for profit and power, anarchism demonstrates radical possibilities for ecological sustainability. And finally, against the work ethic, anarchism also includes a strong element of having fun! If this sounds interesting to you, feel free to drop in for a chat.

Discussions tend to focus loosely around particular topics, depending on what we decide to do. Past topics have included sexuality, drug use, religion, authority, ethics and education, among others. Other meetings have been mostly about relaxed socialising.

The group also aims to provide support for individual experiences of anxiety, exclusion and inequality that result in bureaucratic systems of education, work and social life more generally.
